Mushroom Season
Mushroom season is in full swing and it is GLORIOUS! Please, please, please do your homework when it comes to mushrooms as some are tasty and some deadly. You have been warned!
The mushrooms listed in this video are Saffron Milk Caps, Jelly Ears, Deceivers and Coral mushrooms, all edible and all very tasty.
It took me 20 mins to whip round my local woods to find these guys. Some times when you are looking for a particular mushroom, its best not to look down at the ground but in fact look up at the trees. The trees generally dictate the habitat of certain mushrooms…
As above so below…
Here is a link to a fabulous resource regarding all things mushrooms, wild food and foraging. Galloway Wild Food are based in Scotland but much of the same wild produce is available here. As I always say, there is food everywhere, we just need to wake up to it.
TOP TIP: If I am cooking and eating wild mushrooms, I usually cook them just for myself first, I don’t feed them to my partner at the same time in case they make us both unwell. It’s best to test it alone and make note of what you have eaten. Also, don’t mix different types of wild mushrooms in the same meal unless you have eaten them all before just in case you do end up with an upset tummy, mixing the mushrooms makes it hard to tell which one was the culprit.
As a generally rule I don’t feed my kids wild mushrooms unless I am 100%. confident they are super safe. My motto is, “If in doubt, throw it out”.
Happy Foraging everyone!
Thank you for reading. May you live wild and free.
Love,
